‘New’ Eye Disease Shocks Eye Health Industry

Scientists say, “There’s no cure.”

Scientists at the National Eye Institute are worried about a new variant of macular dystrophy.  Macular dystrophy is a genetic eye disorder that causes progressive blindness. That’s scary.

Even more frightening, this new form of macular dystrophy is so bad, it can ‘suck’ the vision right out of your eyes.

The New Eye Disease

macular dystrophy

This new eye disease (which still hasn’t been given a name) is characterized by leaking blood vessels under the eye.  As these blood vessels leak, it damages central vision in the eye.  The result – your vision disappears, like a galaxy being sucked through a black hole!

Scientists are puzzled by this variant, because of its seemingly random occurrence.  So far, scientists haven’t been able to track the DNA switch that triggers this type of macular dystrophy.  It seems to happen for no apparent reason at all.

Perhaps this new variant should be called, “vampire eye,” because of the blood vessels and people reporting that their vision seems to be getting “sucked away.”  I’m curious to learn what scientists finally name it.

Is Macular Dystrophy the Same as Macular Degeneration?

Macular Degeneration

Many people wonder if macular dystrophy is the same as macular degeneration, but there’s a difference.  The difference is macular degeneration is caused by lifestyle factors (such as smoking) and aging, while macular dystrophy is a genetic disorder passed down through the bloodline.  Unfortunately at this time, there is no cure for macular dystrophy.

Should You Be Worried about ‘Vampire Eye’ Disease?

So should you be worried that you have this new variant of macular dystrophy?  The disorder itself is very rare, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible.  Watch for these warning signs for macular dystrophy:

  1. Dark spots in vision
  2. Extreme light sensitivity
  3. The appearance that objects are floating, moving, vibrating, etc.
  4. Words or print seems to “vanish” as you read them
  5. Visual distortions

As always, it’s important to consult an experienced physician if you believe you may be suffering from muscular dystrophy.

Eye diseases are terrifying for those suffering from them.  It’s important to stay on top of your vision health to ensure you have sharp vision for all your years.  The fact that you use iGenics means you are serious about your eye health, and are doing exactly what you need to keep your vision healthy.

I hope you’ve found this information helpful.
